Questions and AnswersWhat Does "Vegan" Mean?Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Vegans do not use or consume animal products of any kind. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are ethical commitment or moral convictions concerning animal rights, the environment, human health, and spiritual or religious concerns. Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming. Where Can I Get More Information?
How Can Glyde Condoms Be Vegan?Several years ago the Managing Director of GLYDE Health Pty Ltd recieved a number of enquiries from the Vegan community in Australia who wanted to know if it was possible to have condoms produced with no animal content in the manufacturing process. They had made several attempts to speak with major manufacturers but to no avail, and eventually found GLYDE. Many Vegans in the Vegan community had heard that condoms were manufactured using casein in the manufacturing process, casein is a dairy derivative. The Managing Director of GLYDE spoke at length with the manufacturer and worked through the process to ascertain if there were other products which could be substituded for the casein content. As it turned out the use of casein in fact is unnecessary and can be substituted with a vegitable extract taken from the thistle family with out comprimising the manufacturing process. Since 1996 GLYDE condoms have only used this compound in the manufacturing process and as such we have been able to assure the Vegan community world wide that GLYDE condoms and SHEER GLYDE Dams are a Vegan friendly sexual health products. And now, a dozen years later, we have decided to have our condoms and dams registered with the Vegan Society in the United Kingdom. Although it was an understandably long process, we finally got the right to place the Vegan trademark on our products. |
